Peter Suppan completed his PhD in 1996 on the formation and behaviour of the photo oxidants ozone and PAN in regions of variable air pollution situations. He has been Project Manager of several air pollution campaigns in Greece and in Germany during his stay at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany. During his employment at the European Commission in the Joint-research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy, from 1997–2001 he was responsible for the modelling work done within the AUTO-OIL II programme of the Commission. Since 2001 he is working at the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-IFU) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen as a branch of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). As the head of the working group “Regional Coupling of Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes and Air Quality”, he is focusing on coupling and linking micro- to meso-scale models, on air quality assessment studies in urban conglomerations and Mega-Cities and on the impact of climate change on air quality.
The group which he is responsible for is investigating e.g. in Mega-Cities (Beijing, Santiago de Chile and Mexico City) and in sensitive regions like the Alps. He was speaker of the topic “Air Quality and Health” of the Helmholtz Association initiative “Risk Habitat Megacities” which took place in Santiago de Chile (2007-2011).
He was principal investigator and organizer of several workshops on “Air Quality, Climate Change and Health aspects” in Mexico City, Beijing, Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in cooperation with BMBF, CONACYT / Mexico and NFSC/ China. He organized large air quality related conferences like the 9th International Conference on Harmonization within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes or the 9th International Conference on Air Quality - Science and Application held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Since June 2013 he was appointed as Institute Manager of the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-IFU) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. |
