Air quality in cities – current and future issues

For the first time in history more people live in urban areas than in the countryside. This “urban‐turn” causes many risks but gives also opportunities. Severe air pollution levels, health effects, excessive heat effects leads to uncomfortable living and welfare situations in cities, which have to be overcome in the nearest future.

Same examples of the current research on measurement and modelling will give an insight on the burden of particulate matter (PM) in Beijing or e.g. on the urban heat island (UHI) effect on the city of Stuttgart.

Further information will be given on the need of common research of trans‐disciplines and the exchange of knowledge between social and natural sciences.

Finally the future perspective on the urban research is given by an update of initiatives on urban research in Germany.
