Aerosol light absorption and scattering

Aerosol plumes from volcanoes, combustion, biogenic sources, resuspension of desert dust, and photochemical transformation in the atmosphere affect the solar and infrared radiation budget, ecosystem health, solar panel efficiency, and urban prestige for cities striving to be modern, livable locations. These topics relate closely to the spectrally dependent amount of light absorbed and scattered by aerosol, collectively called aerosol optics. In situ ground and aircraft based, and remote sensing from both ground and satellite platforms are used to quantify aerosol optics. This talk will concentrate mostly on in situ measurements, with sections on aerosol optics, measurement methods, insightful results, and current state of the art measurement and science issues.
